THE AZORES BULLFINCH
-
Unique species from the Azores
It is found exclusively in the eastern part of São Miguel island, in the municipalities of Povoação and Nordeste, in restricted areas of laurel forest. Small in size (15 to 17 cm), it is distinguished by its black head, wings, and tail, with the rest of its body a grayish-brown tone. Its melancholy song is distinctive, recognizable in the Azorean forests.
-
Challenges and Hopes in Preservation
The Azores bullfinch, intrinsically linked to Azorean history since the early days of colonization in the 15th century, inhabited the dense Laurisilva forests in Povoação. However, over the centuries, it was mistakenly considered a pest due to the destruction of its habitat by humans. Currently, in the Azores, it faces growing threats from invasive species, both plants and fauna, representing a critical challenge for the survival of this unique and delicate species.
-
Conservation and Sustainability
Since 2003, SPEA has taken on the challenge of conserving the Azores bullfinch, one of the rarest birds in Europe. Three projects have been implemented, focusing on the recovery of the Azores laurel forest habitat and ensuring the sustainability of the species. In addition to environmental restoration, SPEA has prioritized environmental education in local communities and raising awareness among visitors to the Terras do Priolo, seeking a comprehensive approach to the preservation of this threatened species.
